Big plans for Mazarrón’s future (Costa Calida)

The popular towns of Mazarrón and Puerto de Mazarrón should become even more attractive with several schemes to improve facilities, transport links and landscaping. One of the prime areas for improvement is the land on either side of the road that links Mazarrón to Puerto de Mazarrón.

Mayor of Mazarrón Francisco Blaya Blaya, explained that this corridor would be substantially upgraded in the future. The land on either side has been earmarked for public facilities and extensive planting and environmental improvement. The road itself will be substantially improved with dual carriageways in both direction and a central palm-shaded walkway of about 5 km that will allow walkers and cyclists to exercise.

On the western side of this corridor, just before the little hill that takes the road to Puerto de Mazarrón, a major indoor swimming pool complex will be built. The design is being finalised and the next step will be the award of a construction contract. This will allow people to swim all year round. Plans are moving ahead to provide other recreational facilities along the corridor, including a sports stadium and playing fields for a variety of activities. This will be, in effect a 200,000 square metre sports city said the mayor. He pointed out that the town halls planning document sees 82% of the total area protected on environmental grounds. Elsewhere in the area, other important facilities are being provided, including a new health centre at Mazarrón which is out to tender and an outdoor auditorium for entertainment events near to the ancient castle. A new day care centre for elderly people is nearly finished said Mr Blaya Blaya.

Much of the town halls administration has now moved into an elegant new building next to the historic town hall that is now being nenovated. The new facility cost €1.8million and 1,643 square metres over four floors. Space for public enquiries on the ground floor are greatly improved over previous facilities. The old market in Mazarrón is being demolished with an underground car park being built together with a new market and attractive landscaping of the square.

In Puerto de Mazarrón work is being completed on laying new surfaces in the pedestrian areas of the port, the port itself is being upgraded and there are now 426 underground car parking spaces on two levels at the waterfront. By the time the summer season gets fully underway all works should be completed.

The town hall website now includes a section in English giving information about activities, notices, bars, restaurants, hotels, tourism attractions, businesses and the local government. This new section is intended to help our numerous citizens who don’t speak Spanish said the mayor.
