The Secrets of Murcia

If Murcia is a place that you haven't heard of before then you probably wont have heard of Mazarrón. It's one of those places that you find when you decide to choose the road less travelled and for doing so you wont be disappointed.

Located between the Cado and Calnegre to the south and the Sierra de la Muela hills of Cartagena to the north, Mazarrón looks the way Spain must have done prior to the beginning of the tourist boom in the early 60's. Although it has yet to really register with the foreign tourist it is a very popular destination with the Spanish themselves.

You'll be amazed by the lack of high-rise developments, which are commonly found along the Spanish coastline. Development wise, the area is still relatively untouched although mankind has left his mark on the landscape both through the now defunct mines and the tomato plantations that cover the area. Indeed agriculture remains the largest employer, which is no surprise considering Murcia is known as the garden of Europe.

Agriculture has now replaced mining as the areas largest employer although evidence of Mazarróns rich mining history can still be seen in the now abandoned mines located just outside the town. The local agriculture is now made up of growing red and green peppers, melons and tomatoes. Housing the aforementioned fruit and vegetables in huge tarpaulin tents allows the farmers to harvest two to three times a year.

The jewel in the Mazarrón area crown is the fact that it boasts over 30 beaches, many of which are only accessible via bike or on foot as they are nestled among little coves. There are a number of tracks that you could chance e with a car but a 4-wheel drive is recommended. For the naturist among you there's also no shortage of nudist beaches to explore.

Mazarron has beautiful places like Isla plana with typically Spanish Villa's, small coves and beaches. Bolnuevo has something that is called the enchanting city, with sculptures formed by wind and water.
